Emergency rooms closing because they don't have enough doctors and nurses. Surgeries cancelled because they don't have enough doctors and nurses. Rural hospitals closing. Lab appointments booking a month out. Cancer patients being sent to the United States for treatment. Families not being able to find a family doctor. Ambulance wait times increasing if it even shows up. Waiting 12 hours in an emergency room. Our already struggling health care system was pushed past its breaking point by Covid and now we are living with the continued consequences of a system that requires even more investment with an aging population.

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (Canadian Institute for Health Information. CIHI releases inaugural report exploring priority health care topics in Canada):

• 88% of Canadians age 12 and older reported having a regular health care provider.
• There were about 743,000 fewer surgeries performed in Canada during the first 2.5 years of the pandemic, a drop of about 13% compared with before the pandemic.

Every Canadian must be able to have access to a regular family doctor. Every Canadian must be able to access healthcare in urban centres and rural and remote communities. Every Canadian must be able to access emergency medical services promptly. Every Canadian must have access to healthcare when they need, however they need it, wherever they need it.

If our healthcare system isn't working for us, it isn't working and it must be fixed and fixed now.
